Context

The CARTIF Foundation is developing a smart walker for people with reduced mobility. We brought the app they already had on Android to iOS with some improvements.

The challenge

Talk to a physical device through a proprietary Bluetooth protocol, with real-time speed and assistance control, a joystick, emergency contacts, battery and sensor telemetry. It had to be stable, simple for the end user and available in Spanish, English and French.

The work

  1. 01Migration to iOS with Swift, SwiftUI and CoreBluetooth, reusing the same protocol layer.
  2. 02Improvements over the Android version, with automatic reconnection with the walker, a command queue with retries, battery alerts, real-time language switching, dark mode, accessibility and onboarding for new users.

Outcome

A working iOS application, with speed and assistance control, joystick, device settings, LIDAR distances and emergency contact management.
